I’m not sure how I feel about this book. the style can make it incredibly hard to follow in parts, and feels unnecessary when it’s not Oskar narrating.
It doesn’t explicitly say that Oskar is autistic, but I’m guessing that was the author’s intention. I’m autistic and also have ADHD, and I can relate to the jumping narrative, and heightened sensory descriptions.
I think the book may be better received by a non-autistic reader, but simultaneously I can see that the story is objectively good.
I struggled with my rating, and perhaps give it 3.5 rather than the four displayed. The author definitely prioritised style over function, and half of it, in my option, didn’t add to the story.
